a Wider World
There are many people of all ages, for whom reading text
is a difficulty
People with recognised learning disabilities:
- There are around 210,000 people with severe learning
difficulties who need significant help with their daily
living.
- There are a further 1.2 million people who have mild
or moderate learning disabilities, which usually means
they will be able to live independently, but with support.
People for who English text presents challenges
- There are large numbers of people for who English is
a second, non-fluent language
- According to the Basic Skills Agency some 80% of the
prison population have literacy or numeracy difficulties.
